Sensors & Actuators

Air Flow/Mass Sensors

Function: Measures incoming airflow as an indication of engine load. Earlier fuel injection systems us a "Flap Style" air flow sensor, whilst later engine management systems use a "Hot Wire" or "Hot Film" air mass sensor.

Availability: New and changeover/reconditioned units are available. Brands include Bosch, Nippon Denso, JECS & AC Delco.

Auxiliary Air Valves

Function: Provides idle up for cold engine operation by allowing extra measured air to flow around the throttle plate.

Availability: Complete range of auxiliary air valves available for European, Japanese and Australian made vehicles. Electrically and water heated units suiting Bosch, JECS and Denso applications.

Coolant Temperature Sensors

Function: The Coolant Temperature Sensor responds to change in Engine Coolant Temperature. By measuring engine coolant temperature, the ECU knows the average temperature of the engine. The Coolant Temperature Sensor is usually located in a coolant passage just before the thermostat. The Coolant Temperature Sensor is connected top the THW terminal on the ECM.

The Coolant Temperature Sensor is critical to many ECM functions such as fuel injection, ignition timing, variable valve timing, transmisison shifting, etc. Always check to see if the engine is at operating temperature and that the Coolant Temperature Sensor is accurately reporting the temperature to the ECM.

Availability: A full range of Bosch, Standard and Genuine Coolant Temperature Sensors are available from Automotive Service Solutions.

Idle Speed Control Valves
Function: Modern engine management systems use an electrically controlled valve to allow an amount of air to pass around the throttle plate providing a stable engine speed under varying loads such as the air conditioner, electrical loads as well as cold idle. There are dozens of different styles and manufacturers of idle control devices. They may be spring loaded pulsed valves or mechanical "stepper" type devices dependent on the management system.

Availability: Automotive Service Solutions stock a full range of Bosch idle stabiliser and AC Delco I.A.C. valves, as well as stepper type idle control motors as used in Mitsubishi and Ford engine management systems. New and changeover/reconditioned units are available from Automotive Service Solutions to suit most applications.

M.A.P./Pressure Sensors
Function: Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensors, or MAP Sensors as they are more commonly known, create a voltage output signal to the ECU in reference to manifold vacuum (or pressure), as an indication of engine load. These simple units are used in a variety of engine management systems produced by various manufacturers.

Availability: We stock a complete range of sensors for O.E. and Motorsport (1, 2 and 3 bar) applications from suppliers including Bosch, AC Delco, Ford and Denso.

Oxygen/Lambda Sensors
Function: The oxygen sensor is an essential component of the engine management system. It is used by the ECU to monitor the air/fuel ratio of the engine providing tighter control of engine emissions and improving fuel consumption.

The sensor functions by generating a small voltage output in reference to the difference between atmospheric oxygen (a constant value of around 20%), and the amount of oxygen left in the exhaust after combustion (a varying amount). The sensor will generate a low voltage ~100mv, when there is a lean mixture (excess/high oxygen level), and a high voltage ~900mV when there is a rich mixture (lack of oxygen). When the air/fuel ratio is approximately 14.7:1, the sensor generates an average voltage of 465mV. Under normal engine operation the sensor voltage will cycle between 100mV - 900mV as the ECU alters the injector on time to control the air/fuel ratio.

Modern oxygen sensors are equipped with heaters in order to stabilise their temperature and provide more accurate signals. As international emission regulations have tightened, the requirement for multiple sensors has arisen; it is common to find vehicles with two or more sensors particularly in V6 and V8 applications. Oxygen sensors are a wearing service part of any engine management system, and therefore require replacement at regular intervals.

Availability: Automotive Service Solutions stocks a huge number of O.E. application as well as universal oxygen sensors. Single, two, three and four wire oxygen sensors to suit a range of vehicle applications from top quality manufacturers including Bosch, NTK and AC Delco. We only supply high quality sensors with stainless steel, laser welded bodies, correct connectors and stainless steel wiring. Automotive Service Solutions also supplies specific "wide-band" oxygen sensors for Motorsport and development/diagnostic applications.

Thermo-Time Switch
Function: A mechanical, bi-metallic controlled, earthing switch used to control the cold start injector. The Thermo-Time switch provides an earth to the cold start injector whilst the engine is cranking, providing the designated temperature or time value has not been exceeded. Thermo-time switches and cold start injectors are mainly applied to older engine management systems such as K-Jetronic, L-Jetronic and some Japanese systems.

Availability: A full range of Bosch thermo-time switches are available from Automotive Service Solutions.

Throttle Position Switches/Sensors
Function: The Throttle Position Switch transmits a signal to the ECU in relation to throttle plate position. A Throttle Position Switch sends a signal indicating closed or wide open throttle, whereas a Throttle Position Sensor gives a varying voltage in relation to throttle position, typically from a low voltage, approximately 0.8 volts at closed throttle, extending up to around 5 volts at wide open.

Availability: Automotive Service Solutions stock a wide range of throttle switches and sensors to suit a multitude of applications. We also have an extensive cross-reference for rare and unusual applications.
