Information is displayed on a 12.1 in coloured touch-sensitive screen and accessed via clearly labeled touch button menus. Autologic incorporates solid-state technology, has no moving parts and is maintained via the Internet. Each system comes complete with all required cables and connectors and is packed in a rugged flight case.

Performance Tuning


Autologic Performance Tunes are modifications to the manufacturer's vehicle tune data. These modifications are downloaded to the vehicle's Engine Control Module (ECM) from Autologic through the on-board diagnostics connector.

What does tuning involve?


With Autologic, it is surprisingly quick and simple to carry out a Performance Tune upgrade, with great results for the consumer through enhanced performance and for the garage through increased revenue and customer satisfaction.


Before tuning any vehicle, it is first necessary to undertake a diagnostic report to ensure there are no issues which may affect the performance upgrade. Once completed, the relevant performance tuning software is simply uploaded to the vehicle through the Autologic tool via the OBD diagnostic port.


The re-tuning process itself only takes around 25 minutes and involves the electronic removal and re-installation of a more refined and more enhanced version of the vehicle's computer programming. As ECUs cannot communicate during the upgrade process, at the end of the upgrade, the fault memory is cleared and rechecked before the newly tuned vehicle hits the road.



Why do the manufacturers limit the output of their engines?


The standard manufacturer tune is a compromise of hundreds of factors. Principally, the manufacturer must ensure a high degree of engine reliability across the worldwide market taking into account factors such as:


  • Fuel quality
  • Different servicing schedules
  • Different operating environments, such as altitude and terrain
  • Local legislation with regard to power output and emissions

During testing, manufacturers 'tweak' the tunes constantly to achieve individual results for individual tests, thus compromising the overall smoothness of the original tune. Autologic Performance Tunes are optimised for European and US driving conditions. As long, as the manufacturer's service schedule is adhered to, there is no reason') why this extra power cannot be 'unlocked'.



How will the emissions be affected?


All Autologic Performance Tunes are tested to ensure that they comply with Euro emissions laws.



Is the process reversible?


Yes. In the unlikely event that you require the Autologic Performance Tune to be removed, the process can be reversed without any side effects.



Are there any physical changes to the vehicle?


Not usually. Most Autologic Performance Tunes are ECM software downloads only. There will be no physical evidence that the engine has been up-rated. The exception to this statement is the BMW Mini Cooper S. We have two different tunes available. The first is diagnostic only, the second has been optimised for a smaller supercharger pulley.

A recent upgrade carried out on a BMW 530D 2004 EGO, showed an increase of 30bhp. The maximum torque increased by 351b/ft to 4051b/ft. However the largest gain was a staggering increase of 541b/ft @ 3200rpm.



Autologic Diagnostics have developed tunes for all of the control units listed. There are however hundreds of variations for each control unit and vehicle. I is necessary therefore for the garage to diagnose the vehicle with Autologic to determine


  • If a performance tune exists for the current level of ECU software
  • If Autologic are required to develop a Performance Tune for this variation

If a tune does not exist, specific data IS required to be sent about the control unit to Autologic. New Performance Tunes can be written and uploaded to the Autologic website usually within 24 hours.

BMW 535D 326 BHP


When the engineers at Autologic Diagnostics got their hands on the BMW 535D, they were not sure what to expect - after all, this diesel engine already produced 283 bhp while at the same time offering the driver both refinement and economy. However, what came out of the Research and Development Centre in Oxfordshire would prove to be a 326 bhp monster; 441 Ib/ft of torque, that would exceed the standard maximum of 375 Ib/ft throughout the whole engine range.


What is immediately obvious when driving this car is that there is something missing compared to a similar large diesel engine vehicle. There is no turbo lag whatsoever! The torque delivery is smooth and, rather than surging up as the boost from the second turbo takes effect, this vehicle smoothly delivers more and more torque peaking at 441 Ib/ft at 3400 rpm.


Naturally, different driving styles will affect the fuel economy but the engineers were still seeing between 35 and 37 mpg even when testing the vehicle hard. Our team were so impressed with this vehicle that our Technical Director immediately ordered one for himself!

Range Rover Sport TDV8 (Lion) Diesel Unleashing the Beast


The Autologic Performance Tune transforms the TDV8 engine from an impressive 261 bhp to a staggering 318 bhp but how does it handle on the road?


The great thing about the tune is that affords the driver more options when selecting a driving style. Gentle, sedate running around shows an improved fuel economy, whilst burying the throttle pedal will firmly press you into the seat, the 515 Ib/tt of torque accelerating as though you were driving a sports car.


The secret to this drivability becomes clear when you look at the torque curve. Peak torque is achieved at 1600 rpm and held constant right through the driving range, beginning to dip at 3000 rpm. This constant torque delivery ensures a smooth drive throughout the rpm and gear range. In fact, in its tuned form the vehicle will deliver more than its standard 450 Ib/tt right up until it starts to tail at 3600 rpm. Coupled with Land Rover's excellent gearbox, the gear changes appear seamless as the smooth yet very powerful engine propel you along.


The fuel economy is also improved typically beating the standard 25 mpg by 4 to 5 mpg, or an extra 75 miles per tank of fuel.

A recent upgrade carried out on a Mercedes CDi220D, showed an increase of 41 bhp @ 3000 rpm. The maximum torque increased up to 54 I.


Autologic Diagnostics have developed tunes for Mercedes vehicles. However, as each control unit and vehicle has hundreds of variations, the garage must first diagnose the individual vehicle with Autologic to establish if a performance tune exists for the current level of ECU software.


If a tune does not exist for the variant, Autologic Diagnostics can usually develop a Performance Tune and upload it to the Autologic website within 24 hours to enable a tune to be written, specific data is required to be sent about the control unit to Autologic.

S-TYPE D to 'Q' car


Matt Skelton from consumer magazine Jaguar World undertook a road test on an S- TYPE diesel to independently assess just how effective Autologic Performance Tunes can be. Below is an extract from the published article.


II A Autologic’s own tests on a manual S-TYPE diesel produced dyno-measured maximum power and torque gains of 68 bhp and 731b/ft respectively over the standard figures produced by that specific car, but at 3750 rpm in its tuned state, the same car was producing 64 bhp and 90lb/ft more than before at the same revs. In short, those differences should be big enough to feel on the road without too much difficulty - and on our road test they are.


Instantly, with the gearbox left to its own devices in full-auto mode, acceleration feels more eager, and another standing start test on the same stretch of road as before is markedly different. This time - on soaking wet tarmac - the car's traction control kicks into action as the power comes in (such is the extra amount of grunt available) yet, despite that, the tuned car is undoubtedly quicker from a standing start. In the dry with even more traction available, the difference would surely be even more apparent.


Cruising at 65 mpg in top gear, slotting the gear selector to the manual side of the J-gate to select fifth raises revs right into the fat part of the engine's torque/power bands - and a prod on the throttle results in acceleration that is astonishingly assured.


A quick comparison shows why. Jaguar quotes a torques a torque figure for the formidable S-TYPE R of 4081b/ft - but Autologic's dyno figure of 3871b/ft for its tuned diesel mean it's not far behind! II
